There are many men and women who have chosen to live a lifestyle that is not mainstream. Some of the most common subcultures include swingers and polyamorous relationships. Many people consider these activities immoral or unhealthy. What does the Bible say about this? Is it okay for Christians to participate in such lifestyles?
The answers may surprise you.
I will begin by saying that I believe there is no sin that cannot be forgiven if one truly repents. However, I am also a realist; I know that some sins are far worse than others. Therefore, I do not condone the practice of any sexual activity outside of marriage. While many people claim that swinging is only for fun, I would argue that it is actually quite dangerous. In my opinion, swinging can lead to emotional, physical, or even spiritual harm. It is also very difficult to remain faithful when you are constantly being tempted by other people.
You may have come across swinger sites such as Swinger Zone Central, and if you read the reviews, it might seem intriguing. You may wonder whether or not it’s worth trying out. Well, let me tell you right now… it isn’t. If you’re looking for a way to spice up your marriage, there are probably better ways than swinging.
First off, the Bible has plenty to say about the dangers of lust. We’ve already seen that swinger websites encourage lustful behavior. How can you expect anything else after seeing pictures of half-naked women? Also, the thought of your spouse sharing you with other people probably seems extremely intimate. It is possible that this could be a source of jealousy.
Let’s look at what the Bible says about sex and love.
Love: The greatest commandment in all the law is this: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Mark 12:31)
Sex: For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh. (Genesis 2:24)
God does not want us to have sex with just anyone. He created our bodies and desires that we use them within the confines of marriage. Our sexuality is meant to be used to bring joy to others, not to satisfy our own selfish needs. In fact, the word lust means “to kill” because it is ultimately self-centered. This is why Jesus said that adultery was committed inside the heart.
Swinging: If there is any kind of sexual activity outside of marriage, then it is considered sinful. Even though swinging is called an “alternative lifestyle,” it is still living in sin. To engage in sex outside of marriage is to ignore God’s design for human sexuality.
Polyamory: Polyamory is the practice of having multiple romantic partners. People often think that polyamorous relationships are based on love, but they are actually rooted in lust. There is nothing wrong with loving more than one person. In fact, it is encouraged. However, in a healthy relationship, you should only be able to love one person at a time. A person who loves two or more people at once is incapable of giving each individual partner their full attention. Furthermore, they risk losing themselves in the process.
In conclusion, I believe that both swinging and polygamy are harmful to individuals and marriages. They damage our ability to focus on our spouses and prevent us from growing as Christ followers. It is important for us to be careful when considering how to fill our lives. Jesus wants us to seek him first so that we can find true happiness.
